Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, prohibits, among other things,
discrimination in employment "because of sex" or "on the basis of sex." In 1978, Congress enacted the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to clarify the scope of prohibited sex discrimination. This chapter of the employment law handbook addresses the PDA and analyzes its import for employers.
